Leigh Leopards owner rebukes NRL over London Broncos promotion demand

A standoff has emerged between the National Rugby League (NRL) and Super League clubs regarding a proposed partnership deal. The NRL has reportedly made the promotion of the London Broncos to the Super League a condition for investment into the European competition.

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont has strongly opposed this requirement, describing the NRL's deadline for an agreement as a “gun to the head approach akin to a ransom.” Beaumont argued that promoting London without due process is improper, noting that the London Broncos were not the highest-ranked Championship club in recent grading tables, a distinction held by the Barrow Raiders.

Beaumont raised concerns regarding the legality and fairness of the move, suggesting that any expansion should follow an established application process rather than a direct mandate. He also questioned the reliability of NRL Chairman Peter V’landys, citing shifts in the proposed deal's terms. Super League clubs held a meeting to discuss the issue but have yet to reach a resolution.
