Leila Abolhasani, a 43-year-old mother of two, has been sentenced to death by hanging in Iran. The sentence follows her arrest on January 8 in the satellite city of Shahin Shahr, where she was reportedly filming a fire at an Ofogh Koorosh grocery store during anti-regime protests.

According to reports from IranWire, the judiciary charged Abolhasani with ‘Moharebeh’, or ‘enmity against God’. While authorities allege she participated in the arson of the retail store, her family maintains she was merely documenting the blaze on her phone.

In late May, Vahid Hemmatnejad, the presiding judge of Branch 5 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, handed down the death sentence. Abolhasani, who has been held at Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan, has appealed the verdict. Her case has been moved to the Supreme Court for review.
