Leimen unveils blue 'Europa' ice cream amid consumer warnings on additives

At Leimen's annual spring festival on May 26, ice‑cream shop Dolce Freddo introduced a newly created "Europa" ice cream. Chef Stefano Brustolon, working with local council member Ralf Frühwirt, developed a deep‑blue flavour using mint and pistachio that contains no artificial colourings. The mayor, John Ehret, and Frühwirt presented the scoop, emphasising the link between local initiatives and European politics.

A separate consumer report highlights how many German ice‑cream parlours may disguise lower‑quality products. Terms such as “self‑made” or “from own production” are not legally binding and can hide the use of pre‑made bases, colour additives, or emulsifiers like lecithin. Visible signs include overly bright colours, tall ice‑cream towers (often stabilised with emulsifiers), and slow‑melting scoops. The report calls for clearer labelling of ingredients and warns that even waffle cones may contain palm‑oil‑based fats.

Together, the local celebration of innovative, additive‑free ice cream and the broader caution about industry practices reflect a growing public interest in food transparency in Germany.
