Leinster Rugby faces squad and financial challenges for 2026-27 season

Leinster Rugby faces a complex landscape heading into the 2026-27 season, characterized by high player costs and squad transitions. The province operates with annual revenues of approximately €30m, supported by IRFU funding, ticketing, and commercial revenue. A significant portion of the wage bill is subsidized by the IRFU, which covers 60% of the salaries for the 11 centrally contracted players.

Top earners include Dan Sheehan and captain Caelan Doris, both estimated to earn between €600,000 and €700,000 annually. Other high-profile players such as Jamison Gibson-Park and Tadhg Furlong also command substantial salaries.

However, the club faces challenges including a reduced senior squad size and the loss of several test players to overseas clubs. There are also concerns regarding financial pressures stemming from the RDS redevelopment, increased contributions to central contract costs, and a decline in average home crowd sizes, which dropped from 30,000 in 2024/25 to 23,000 in 2025/26.
