Leipzig/Halle Airport drone attack targets Ukrainian cargo plane
An explosive-laden drone targeted an Antonov Airlines cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 5, 2026. The aircraft was reportedly transporting ammunition destined for Ukraine. Surveillance footage indicates the drone, equipped with Semtex explosives, intentionally struck the plane's wing near the fuel tank at approximately 19:30. The device failed to detonate upon impact, ricocheting off the aircraft before falling to the ground.
The drone was not detected by airport security systems and was discovered approximately four hours later by an airport bus driver. Investigators have recovered DNA traces from the device that match a European database and point toward Lithuania. Notably, these traces also match DNA from a July 2024 arson attack on a DHL logistics center at the same airport.
While German officials, including Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, have characterized the incident as a 'professional hybrid threat scenario,' the German government has not officially attributed the attack to a specific state. However, U.S. intelligence officials, citing reports from the Wall Street Journal and CNN, believe the drone is linked to the Russian government or its military intelligence services.
