Explosive Drone Discovered at Leipzig Airport Near Ukrainian Antonov Planes
A drone loaded with roughly 800 g of PETN and Semtex explosives was found hovering a few metres above two Ukrainian Antonov An‑124 cargo aircraft at Leipzig Airport on Tuesday night. The device’s detonator was defective, preventing an explosion. German authorities, including the Federal Prosecutor's Office, are treating the incident as a possible attack on national security. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called it a “new level of danger” and noted the drone had been modified to evade electronic detection, suggesting a professional operation rather than a prank.
A bus driver on the airport’s service route spotted the drone, stopped his vehicle, and manually forced the drone to the ground before alerting officials, averting a potential catastrophe. Airport traffic was temporarily halted while the device was examined. A DHL aircraft later encountered another object, possibly a second drone, and was diverted to Hannover. While no official attribution has been made, German officials have hinted at Russian involvement, describing the act as a hybrid‑threat scenario.
Margarita Seselgyte, director of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science in Vilnius, warned that such attacks aim to sow chaos in Europe, undermine unity, and increase the cost of protecting critical infrastructure.
