Leipzig Airport drone attack suspected of Russian involvement

An explosive-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August. The device, which was equipped with a detonator, was reportedly aimed at the cargo plane.

Security expert Markus Reisner noted that DNA evidence from the incident links it to a July 2024 attack on DHL, which also suggested Russian involvement. This assessment aligns with reports from US intelligence services. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded by stating that Russia would intensify measures to disrupt Western military support for Ukraine.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the Leipzig incident may not be an isolated event but could be part of a larger pattern of coordinated attack scenarios. While he acknowledged the investigations, he emphasized the need for concrete evidence before officially attributing responsibility to a specific state actor.
