Leipzig begins construction of solar carport pilot project

Construction has officially begun on an innovative photovoltaic carport pilot project at the Neue Messe Leipzig. The project, which is supported by two million euros from the Free State of Saxony, will feature over 2,100 solar panels installed across 330 park-and-ride parking spaces.

The facility is designed to generate 915,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, an amount equivalent to the yearly consumption of approximately 300 households. By utilizing existing sealed surfaces, the project aims to expand renewable energy without requiring additional land use.

This initiative is a component of Leipzig's urban climate protection strategy. It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 335 tons per year and increase local energy supply security. The clean solar power produced will be fed directly into the city's power grid.
