Leipzig begins first phase of industrial railway upgrade

Construction of the first section of the Industriepark Nord main line (Industriestammgleis) in Leipzig has started. The work, scheduled to finish by mid‑August 2026, replaces deteriorated wooden sleepers with 60‑year‑life concrete sleepers over a 1.6 km stretch between the CityHub Leipzig crossover and the former BMW/Neue Messe crossover. A ballast‑cleaning machine will be used initially, and a new light‑signal system will be installed at the Handelsring level crossing.

The upgrade aims to boost the rail link for the Industriepark Nord, including the BMW plant and CityHub Leipzig, improving safety and ensuring long‑term usability of the infrastructure. The project, overseen by the city of Leipzig, the property office and GAM GmbH Co KG, will continue with a second phase in 2026‑27 to replace additional sleepers and renew switches.
