Leipzig cultural institutions implement climate protection networks

Cultural institutions in Leipzig are increasing their sustainability through specialized climate protection networks. Since 2021, a network for municipal cultural facilities has been active, followed by a network for the independent cultural scene in 2024. These initiatives are led by the Cultural Department in collaboration with GICON Großmann Ingenieur Consult GmbH and Fraunhofer ISI.

The collaboration has produced digital tools such as a checklist for the legally secure transfer of materials and the ‘E-Tool Kultur’ CO2 calculator, which helps institutions determine greenhouse gas balances for buildings and events.

Recent assessments of 23 institutions identified several areas for improvement, including building structures and visitor mobility. Practical measures already implemented include adjusting heating and ventilation controls at the Johann Sebastian Bach municipal music school, installing heat pumps at the Neue Musik school, and transitioning to LED lighting at venues such as the Gewandhaus, Schauspiel, TDJW, and the Gallery for Contemporary Art.
