Leipzig hosts screening of DEFA classic ‘Spur der Steine’

The architecture film series ‘Architektur im Film’, organized by the Center for Building Culture Saxony and the City of Leipzig, will present the DEFA classic ‘Spur der Steine’ by Frank Beyer at UT Connewitz on August 25, 2026.

The film depicts the life of Brigadier Hans Balla at a large construction site in Schkona. Due to its critical portrayal of GDR leadership and social issues, the production was only rehabilitated in 1989.

The event will include a welcome by Nora Gitter, the coordinator for building culture, and a presentation by Dr. Stephanie Weismann from the Leibniz Institute for East European History and Culture regarding the ‘Leipzig Paving Stories’ project. This initiative invites citizens to share personal anecdotes related to the city's various historical floorings.
