Leipzig implements navigation technology for visually impaired citizens
The city of Leipzig has implemented an innovative navigation system known as a ‘speaking stone’ to assist blind and visually impaired individuals. Utilizing LOC.id technology and Bluetooth, the system automatically triggers acoustic information when a person approaches a specific location.
Installed at a municipal administrative building, the device provides precise details regarding entrance barriers and access instructions. Dr. Daria Luchnikova, the municipal representative for people with disabilities, noted that such technical solutions are vital when structural modifications are difficult to implement, particularly in protected historical buildings.
The project, which cost approximately 2,000 euros and was funded by the Free State of Saxony, serves as a pilot for potential future applications. Possible uses include enhanced orientation signals at traffic lights and providing real-time information in public transport, such as line numbers, directions, and vehicle door locations.
