Leipzig landscape transformation discussed in new book

Author and urban planner Bertram Weisshaar has released a new book, ‘Letzte Kohle. Andere Landschaften’, which examines the transformation of landscapes following the end of lignite mining in the Central German mining district.

During a presentation at the Leipzig City Library, discussions focused on how former open-cast mining areas in the north and south of Leipzig can be converted into unique landscapes. One area of interest is the Revierpark Profen, located near Leipzig, which serves as a testament to industrial culture. There are suggestions that these transformed areas could eventually form the basis for a ‘Nationalpark Braunkohle’ (Lignite National Park) in the south of Leipzig.

The transition marks the end of an era where mining shaped the relationship between the city and its surrounding cultural landscapes, with the goal of preserving industrial heritage while creating new natural spaces.
