Leipzig pilots curb-side charging for electric vehicles

Leipziger Stadtwerke has launched a pilot project to test curb-side charging technology for electric vehicles in Leipzig. The initiative aims to provide charging options in urban areas where space is limited and traditional charging stations are difficult to install due to narrow sidewalks or urban design constraints.

The pilot features charging points integrated directly into the curb, developed by Rheinmetall. These units are approximately one meter long and weigh 80 kilograms. To ensure functionality in various weather conditions, the technology includes integrated heating to prevent freezing in winter and drainage systems for rain.

The test phase is scheduled to last one year, during which officials will evaluate customer acceptance and the system's performance in daily use. If successful, the city may expand the installation of these curb-side charging points throughout the city center. This project comes as the number of registered electric vehicles in Leipzig has seen significant growth, increasing by approximately 20 percent between 2025 and 2026.
