Leipzig maps urban areas for ecological compensation

The City of Leipzig has initiated a mapping project to identify potential ecological compensation areas for future construction projects. Starting August 31 and expected to continue until October 23, 2026, staff from the Institute for Vegetation Science and Landscape Ecology will survey selected brownfields and vacant lots on behalf of the City Planning Office.

The project aims to assess the ecological status of these sites and identify potential for enhancement. This initiative is necessary because Leipzig’s existing municipal land pool for compensation measures has been exhausted due to rapid urban growth and increasing competition for space. By identifying new areas, the city hopes to facilitate construction while preserving habitats for local flora and fauna.

To evaluate these sites, officials will utilize the city’s biotope network concept, which focuses on maintaining connected habitats to prevent species decline. The city is requesting that private landowners grant access to surveyors and is also inviting owners to volunteer their land as compensation areas via email.
