Leipzig marks school start with research insights and zoo events

As approximately 100,000 children in Central Germany begin their school year, researchers from the University of Leipzig are highlighting the importance of emotional and social support during this transition. Through the Switch research project at the Humboldt Center for Child Development (HumanKind), experts such as Professor Tina Malti emphasize that a successful start requires more than academic skills like reading and math; children also need reliable relationships, emotional security, and the confidence to face new challenges.

In Leipzig, the Zoo Leipzig is marking the occasion by offering free admission to first-grade students over the weekend. The zoo has organized a program featuring crafts, puzzles, puppet theater, and character appearances to provide families with a celebratory way to navigate the logistical changes and new routines associated with starting school.
