Leipzig Marx relief undergoes major restoration

The massive bronze Marx relief in Leipzig, titled ‘Aufbruch’, is undergoing a comprehensive restoration. The 33-ton artwork, which features a four-meter-tall head of Karl Marx, is being cleaned and treated with a protective wax layer to remove harmful oxidation and decades of accumulated dirt.

Estimated at approximately 50,000 euros, the maintenance is being funded by the Free State of Saxony. The relief, measuring 14.4 by 6 by 3 meters, was originally installed in the 1970s above the main building of the former Karl-Marx-University. Following the demolition of the original GDR building, the piece was temporarily dismantled and stored before being re-erected at the university’s sports campus in 2008.

Restoration specialists from the Berlin-based firm Haber & Brandner are currently performing the manual cleaning work. Experts note that this may be the first significant maintenance the monument has received in its fifty-year history.
