Leipzig opens new Parthe bridge in Abtnaundorf
The new Parthe bridge in Abtnaundorf is scheduled to reopen on October 21, 2026, following approximately one year of construction. The three-meter-wide aluminum structure replaces a deteriorating 1970s steel bridge that had been restricted to emergency pedestrian use due to safety concerns.
Designed to improve connectivity between Mockau and Abtnaundorf, the bridge facilitates access to local sports facilities and the Schönefeld summer bath. It also restores continuity to the Parthe-Mulde cycle path, linking Leipzig city center to the northeast. To ensure accessibility for cyclists, families with strollers, and people with limited mobility, the previous steep staircase on the western side has been replaced with a steel ramp.
The project cost approximately 2.1 million euros, with 1.6 million euros provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport through the ‘Stadt und Land’ special program. Construction was noted as particularly challenging due to the site's location within a flora-fauna habitat and a landscape protection area.
