Leipzig plans new residential quarter near Bremer Straße

Leipzig city officials have launched a draft development plan for a new residential quarter east of Bremer Straße in the Gohlis-Nord district. The project aims to transform approximately 7 hectares of former military barracks into a living space for up to 1,350 people.

The plan includes the construction of roughly 770 residential units, with 30 percent designated as rent- and occupancy-controlled housing. Architectural designs for the area near Bremer Straße will feature four- to five-story buildings inspired by the adjacent historic Krochsiedlung, while the northeastern sections near the landscape protection area may consist of terraced or townhouses.

To preserve local biodiversity, certain northeastern sections of the site will remain undeveloped. A central green corridor, intended for public recreation, will connect the various residential zones. The site, which was used by the Soviet Army until 1992, has remained largely vacant since then. The final decision rests with the city council, after which the draft will be published for public and association feedback.
