Leipzig protects historic monuments with wooden enclosures
The Leipzig Cultural Office is implementing seasonal protective measures for approximately 15 monuments, primarily located in the city center, to prevent winter damage. These enclosures target monuments made of porous natural stone, which are susceptible to cracking when moisture penetrates the material and expands during freezing temperatures.
In addition to the monuments, the office manages about 20 green spaces and bodies of water, including areas in the Old Johannisfriedhof and Schlosspark Lützschena. The Grassi Museum also assists by enclosing monuments within its courtyards. This preservation practice has been used in Leipzig since the early 1990s to protect monuments restored following German reunification.
The enclosure season typically runs from October until Easter. A significant tradition involves the unveiling of the Old Bach Monument on March 21, the birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach. To maintain public engagement, some new wooden enclosures feature viewing windows, and eleven monuments have been equipped with new information boards detailing their history.
