Leipzig single mother faces eviction due to rising costs

A ZDF report titled ‘Knapp bei Kasse: Arm trotz Arbeit’ highlights the precarious living situation of Luisa, a 31-year-old single mother of two living in Leipzig, Germany.

Despite working a minijob and receiving social benefits, Luisa’s family lives at a financial limit due to rising inflation and increasing utility costs. The family currently faces the threat of losing their three-room apartment because the Jobcenter is refusing to adjust rent coverage to meet rising costs.

Luisa is attempting to maintain her home to ensure her children remain close to their school, daycare, and necessary therapeutic services. To manage expenses, she employs extreme cost-saving measures, such as reusing bathwater to clean the toilet.
