Leipzig to host first central Duke of Edinburgh's International Award ceremony

On October 2, 2026, Leipzig will host its first central award ceremony for the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. The event, held in the Council Chamber of the New Town Hall, will honor young people from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

Susann Rüthrich, the Children and Youth Commissioner for the Saxon State Government, is providing patronage for the ceremony. Vicki Felthaus, Leipzig's Mayor for Youth, School, and Democracy, will welcome approximately 100 guests, including award recipients, volunteer leaders, and families.

Established in 1956 by Kurt Hahn and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award reaches over one million young people annually in more than 130 countries. The program focuses on personal development for individuals aged 14 to 24 through voluntary service, physical activity, skill acquisition, and adventure.
