Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe to coordinate nationwide autonomous driving project

The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) is coordinating MILA. mobility, a nationwide German research and development project focused on autonomous driving within public transportation. The initiative involves 30 partners from various sectors, including transport companies, industry, science, and associations.

The project aims to create an open, manufacturer-neutral platform that allows autonomous vehicles from different providers to integrate seamlessly into existing public transport control, dispatch, and infrastructure systems. This approach seeks to move beyond isolated pilot solutions toward standardized, large-scale operational use.

Supported by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space, the project has a total volume of approximately 57 million euros, with 32.6 million euros in government funding. Development will begin in a virtual laboratory to test components and interfaces before transitioning to real-world testing across five designated regions: Leipzig, Hannover, Munich, Ludwigslust-Parchim, and the Rhine-Main area.
