Leipzig/Halle Airport expansion faces legal challenges
The Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen has commenced oral hearings regarding the planned expansion of cargo infrastructure at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The legal proceedings involve ten lawsuits filed against a planning approval decision issued by the Saxony State Directorate in September 2024.
The plaintiffs include environmental associations, four businesses, three private individuals, and the town of Schkeuditz. The proposed project aims to expand cargo handling capacities at Germany’s second-largest cargo airport, with an estimated investment volume of approximately 300 million euros.
Key components of the expansion include increasing the DHL apron area by 39 hectares to accommodate larger aircraft, constructing new taxiways, building dedicated de-icing areas, and installing additional operational buildings. While the State Directorate of Saxony has the option for immediate execution, Leipzig/Halle Airport GmbH has opted to delay primary civil engineering works until the conclusion of the main judicial review.
