Leipzig–Schkeuditz bicycle expressway receives initial funding

Initial funding has been secured for the Leipzig–Schkeuditz bicycle expressway, a project designed to connect Leipzig and Schkeuditz with long-term plans to extend the route to Halle. The planned route will begin at the west side of Leipzig Central Station and pass through Möckern, Wahren, Stahmeln, and Lützschena. At the city limits, the project will transition to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, which will manage further planning toward Schkeuditz.

The expressway aims to provide a high-quality, safe, and fast cycling connection largely separated from motor vehicle traffic. By minimizing intersections and stops, the infrastructure is intended to encourage commuters to switch from cars to bicycles, thereby reducing traffic congestion in urban districts and promoting environmentally friendly mobility.

Building Mayor Thomas Dienberg described the project as the ‘premium class’ for commuters, noting its potential to relieve main roads and support the city's mobility strategy. The project has received broad regional support, including a joint declaration of intent from political leaders in Leipzig, Schkeuditz, Kabelsketal, and Halle.
