Lekan Ewenla: Health insurance can curb sudden deaths in Nigeria
Lekan Ewenla, Managing Director of Ultimate Health Management Services, has stated that health insurance in Nigeria can help reduce sudden deaths by emphasizing preventive care over curative services. Speaking in Lagos, Ewenla argued that the primary purpose of health insurance is to shift the health-seeking behavior of Nigerians, encouraging them to monitor their health status regularly rather than waiting for serious illness or emergencies.
Ewenla noted that the system is designed to cover both preventive and curative healthcare, providing a framework for consistent contact with medical providers. He urged a move away from the common reliance on out-of-pocket payments for medical expenses.
The remarks follow a September 4, 2025, circular from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which introduced sanctions for non-compliance with mandatory health insurance enrolment. Ewenla emphasized the need for the National Health Insurance Authority to launch strategic public awareness campaigns to educate the population on the benefits of the program and the legal implications of non-compliance.
