Lelystad council bans housing construction in city parks

The Lelystad municipal council has passed a decision to restrict housing construction within or on the edges of city parks. This policy aims to prevent development that would diminish the surface area, recreational utility, or ecological value of existing green spaces.

The decision tightens previous plans that allowed for exceptional construction if the proceeds were used to enhance the park. The council, supported by various political parties including Mooi Lelystad, Pro Lelystad, and the Partij voor de Dieren, rejected these exceptions for both large city parks and smaller neighborhood parks.

As the city seeks to manage costs associated with maintaining excessive public space, it must now focus on 'inbreiding'—developing housing within existing urban areas. This follows national mandates to reduce maintenance expenditures for cities with high levels of public greenery and vacancy.
