Lemnos Deputy Mayor arrested following Thanos area fire

The Deputy Mayor of Environment and Quality of Life on the island of Lemnos has been arrested following a fire that broke out in the Thanos area on Friday, August 21. The arrest followed an investigation by the Mytilene Fire Service.

Investigators determined the fire originated at a site designated for the deposition of inert materials, which had also become a collection point for trash, branches, and other flammable debris. A witness testimony reportedly played a decisive role in confirming the fire's starting point.

The incident required the emergency evacuation of 59 people, many of whom had to be moved by sea due to limited land escape routes. The fire has prompted renewed discussions regarding the necessity of re-evaluating evacuation and emergency plans for settlements with narrow or difficult access roads, similar to recent fire incidents in Plomari.
