Lemon tree care: preventing root rot in potted citrus during September rains

To prevent root rot in potted lemon trees during the September rains, gardeners should avoid letting water stagnate in saucers. The Société Nationale d’Horticulture de France warns that root asphyxiation is a primary cause of mortality for citrus plants grown in containers.

When saucers fill with rainwater, water can rise through capillary action, saturating the substrate and displacing oxygen. This can damage the root system and allow pathogens to enter within 48 hours. It is recommended to empty saucers 15 to 30 minutes after rainfall and ensure pots are slightly elevated to prevent continuous contact with residual moisture.
