Lemongrass (Capim‑santo) Benefits Highlighted in Brazil

Capim‑santo (Cymbopogon citratus), also known as lemongrass, is an aromatic plant native to South‑East Asia and now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical countries. In Brazil it is listed in the Formulário de Fitoterápicos of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and promoted by ANVISA for its medicinal properties.

The plant’s leaves contain bioactive compounds that are reported to: • Promote relaxation and reduce mild anxiety; • Improve sleep quality when consumed as a warm tea before bedtime; • Aid digestion by relieving gas, heaviness and mild cramps; • Provide antioxidant effects that help neutralise free radicals and protect cells. These uses are common in Brazilian households for teas, culinary dishes and traditional remedies.
