León bean harvest expected to reach 14,247 tons

The bean harvest in the province of León is currently underway, with an estimated production of 14,247 tons. According to the agricultural organization Asaja, the dry and hot weather has been favorable for the collection process, which covers approximately 6,000 hectares of irrigated land.

Asaja has formally requested the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, to ensure fairer treatment regarding Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies for bean cultivation in the 2027-2033 reform period. The organization emphasizes that León is the leading bean-producing province in Spain, yet national production remains in deficit and dependent on imports.

Asaja argues for increased economic support through the 'protein plan' and the approval of 'associated aid' to stabilize producer income. They cite low profitability, climatic risks, and a lack of technological responses for what is often classified as a 'minor crop' as primary reasons for needing more robust institutional backing.
