León celebrates traditional San Froilán festivities

The city of León celebrates the festivities of San Froilán, the patron saint of the Diocese of León. The tradition, which has roots in the Middle Ages, serves as a cultural link between the urban capital and the surrounding rural provinces through religious ceremonies, parades, and traditional symbols.

San Froilán was born in Lugo in 833 and lived an eremitic life in the Bierzo and Curueño mountains before being consecrated as the Bishop of León around the year 900. His relics are preserved under the high altar of the León Cathedral. The festivities held around October 5, the date of his death, feature decorated carts and processions toward La Virgen del Camino.
