León City Council clarifies dress code for San Froilán parade

The León City Council has clarified the dress code regulations for the 2026 San Froilán Pendones Parade following significant controversy. The municipal government confirmed that participants will not be excluded from the parade if they choose to wear the identifying polo shirts or t-shirts of their respective groups.

The dispute arose after the publication of new regulations, developed alongside the Association of Pendones of the Kingdom of León, which suggested a strict dress code to maintain solemnity. The guidelines recommended traditional Leonese attire or a uniform of black trousers, white shirts, dark footwear, and sashes to avoid the event appearing like a casual parade. This sparked opposition from 39 municipalities and local districts, which signed a letter rejecting what they termed a ‘gray uniformity’ that threatened the unique identity and color of their towns.

To resolve the tension, the City Council specified that while traditional clothing is recommended to enhance the event's image, these guidelines are not mandatory requirements for participation. Groups may continue to use their local identifying apparel without fear of sanction or exclusion.
