Spanish municipalities implement new waste taxes and service changes

Various Spanish municipalities are implementing new fiscal measures and facing political disputes regarding local services.

In Granada, the PSOE has accused the local government of withholding files from the Ombudsman regarding bus service cuts in the North District, which have left residents without afternoon transport since February. Additionally, the PSOE has proposed rewarding citizens who recycle more through the waste tax.

Several cities are adjusting waste management fees. León has proposed an average annual waste tax of 94.91 euros. El Vendrell is implementing a progressive waste tax aimed at environmental impact, with potential reductions for smaller residences. Calp has approved a new ordinance that reduces waste fees for standard homes by approximately 18% while increasing costs for tourist housing and businesses. Sa Pobla is introducing fees for excess non-recyclable waste and construction debris. In Madrid, the local government maintains that waste taxes are mandatory despite legal challenges and opposition from Más Madrid, which has encouraged citizens to appeal the charges.

Other local developments include Pontevedra's BNG supporting a popular legislative initiative to protect the Galician language, and El Vendrell renewing an agreement to preserve municipal cultural giants.
