León heritage commission approves restoration and documents 18th-century winery discovery

The Territorial Commission of Cultural Heritage of León has authorized several heritage-related projects and documented findings in the province. During archaeological control work at the Granja de Santullano restoration site in San Esteban de Valdueza, Ponferrada, an 18th-century structure was discovered. The building, identified as an ancient winery belonging to the priory, contained three wine storage vessels known as ‘tinos’. Artifacts found at the site, including pottery and a 1775 coin from the reign of Charles III, date its use between the 18th and the first half of the 19th century. The commission has authorized the dismantling of the structure, provided it is thoroughly documented through plans, photography, and photogrammetry for future exhibition.

Additionally, the commission approved the full restoration of a ‘hórreo’ (traditional granary) declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in Carande, Riaño. The project includes structural repairs to wooden pieces and the roof. The commission also reviewed archaeological prospection reports for the La Llanada industrial park expansion, which yielded no significant findings.
