León leads Castilla y León with most municipal pools
The province of León has the highest number of municipal swimming pools in Castilla y León, with 190 facilities (42 covered and 148 open‑air). This translates to one pool for every 2,358 residents, a ratio slightly below the regional average of one per 2,291 inhabitants. The autonomous community records a total of 1,048 public‑health‑monitored pools, of which 764 (73 %) are publicly owned and 284 are private. Covered pools number 162, split almost evenly between public and private ownership, while uncovered pools total 886, the vast majority being public.
A separate cadastral count shows 5,655 uncovered pools in León, including private household installations. Ponferrada tops this register with 659 pools, followed by Villaquilambre (354) and the city of León (218). Inspections of municipal pools are carried out four times a year, as detailed in the regional “Calidad de las aguas de recreo” report.
The data highlight the uneven geographic distribution of swimming facilities across the region, with provinces such as Segovia and Ávila enjoying higher per‑capita availability, while Burgos and Valladolid have the lowest.
