León maize production benefits from drought in northwest Spain

Drought conditions affecting northwestern Spanish autonomous communities, including Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, are creating a market opportunity for maize production in the province of León. The lack of rainfall has deteriorated pastures and reduced maize production for silage in these northern regions.

León, a major maize producer in Spain, currently has 75,000 hectares dedicated to the crop. While approximately 71,200 hectares are initially intended for grain, the area dedicated to forage maize could increase significantly due to the regional shortage. According to ASAJA León, the campaign is progressing favorably with an agronomic advancement of about two weeks, meaning many farms are ready for silage harvest.

Because transportation costs are a limiting factor for high-volume animal feed, León is well-positioned to supply Galicia and Asturias, and can compete for markets in Cantabria. Selling maize for forage allows Leonese farmers to access new markets without saturating the grain supply, while also allowing farms to be prepared for subsequent crops more quickly.
