León municipalities adopt solar energy to offset rising winter utility costs

Municipalities in the León region are implementing solar energy strategies to mitigate rising electricity and gas costs, which are projected to increase by 20% to 30% during the winter months.

Several towns have already adopted green energy solutions. Sariegos, a participant in the international Flexunity project, utilizes solar panels to achieve between 55% and 70% energy self-management. Valverde de la Virgen has also installed 180 solar panels at its sports center using European funds.

In contrast, San Andrés del Rabanedo, the most populous municipality in the area, remains vulnerable to market volatility. The local government is planning a 111,320 euro project to modernize its heating systems and install 22 photovoltaic modules to pursue future self-consumption.
