León province records hottest June since records began
The city of León in north‑western Spain experienced its warmest June on record, with an average temperature of 21 °C – 3.3 °C above the long‑term mean – and extreme dryness, receiving only 7.6 mm of rain, about a 75 % reduction from normal. Minimum and maximum daily temperatures also set new highs, reaching 13.1 °C and 28.8 °C respectively. The climate agency AEMET classified the month as “extremely warm”.
The heat wave is also raising concerns for vehicle reliability. Temperatures on the road can exceed 60 °C inside cars and 70 °C on asphalt, accelerating wear on engines, batteries, tires, oil, brakes and cooling systems. Experts advise drivers to check coolant levels, battery health, tire pressure (when cold), and overall vehicle condition before long trips to avoid breakdowns during the prolonged heat.
These concurrent records underscore the broader impacts of the summer heat on both public comfort and everyday transportation in Spain.
