Spain crime report shows rising violence despite falling property theft
Data from the Ministry of the Interior's 2026 crime balance reveals varying trends across Spain. Nationally, criminal activity saw a slight increase of 0.5% in the first half of the year. While property crimes like thefts and certain burglaries have decreased in many areas, there has been a notable rise in more violent or specific categories.
In Castilla y León, crime rose by 6.5%, driven by a 20.8% spike in robberies involving violence and intimidation. Similarly, Castilla-La Mancha reported a 7% increase, with a 50% rise in completed homicides. In Teruel, the province saw an 18.3% overall increase, largely due to a 43.6% surge in burglaries in homes and establishments.
Conversely, Catalonia reported a 7.4% decrease in general crime, primarily due to a drop in minor property crimes and thefts. However, this region saw increases in completed homicides and sexual assaults involving penetration. In Tarragona, overall crime fell by 2.1%, though sexual assaults rose by 24.7%. In Alhama, specific categories like home burglaries fell by 32%, despite a general municipal increase in total infractions.
