León Zoo celebrates birth of endangered spider monkey

A baby Mexican spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus) was born in early October at the León Zoo in Guanajuato, Mexico. The newborn joins a troop of 17 existing individuals currently under specialized care.

The species is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and illegal wildlife trafficking. The zoo noted that the birth supports biological conservation efforts and animal welfare initiatives.

Veterinary staff and caregivers provided daily monitoring to ensure a successful birth. The young primates are known for their strong maternal bonds, initially clinging to their mothers' abdomens before moving to their backs as they grow.
