León Zoo reports death of four-year-old giraffe

The León Zoo in Guanajuato, Mexico, reported the death of Mayra, a four-year-old reticulated giraffe, on the morning of Sunday, September 27. Zoo officials stated that the death appeared to be sudden and due to natural causes, noting that her medical records showed no prior symptoms or illnesses.

Upon discovering the animal lacked vital signs around 9:00 a.m., the zoo activated emergency protocols and requested a specialist veterinary pathologist to perform a necropsy. Initial inspections found no obvious external injuries or marks.

Local council member Norma Patricia López Zúñiga has raised concerns regarding potential negligence within the zoo's operational management. She criticized the lack of detail in the initial reports regarding the animal's welfare and the circumstances surrounding the sudden discovery of the deceased giraffe. This incident follows the death of another giraffe at the same facility in July.
