Lendager to build sustainable nine-story timber tower in Copenhagen
Construction is set to begin next month on JORD, a nine-story sustainable office building located at the entrance to Nordhavn in Copenhagen. Developed through a collaboration between pension fund PFA, urban developers Kilden & Hindby, and Lendager, the project aims to set new standards for sustainable construction in Denmark.
To minimize weight for its location above a metro station, the design avoids traditional concrete in its core and structure, utilizing wood, clay, and hemp instead. Architect Anders Lendager noted that the project was inspired by the resource efficiency of termite structures. The building is expected to have a CO2 footprint 23 percent lower than conventional buildings.
Resource circularity is a central theme of the project. Rather than ordering new materials to fit a design, the architecture was shaped around available resources. This includes the use of recycled glass panels for all windows, sourced from panes previously rejected due to minor flaws.
