An Ecuadorian court has sentenced former President Lenin Moreno to five years in prison for bribery. The conviction is linked to the construction of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric dam, the country's largest power plant.

Prosecutors alleged that the Chinese state-owned firm Sinohydro paid approximately $76 million in bribes to facilitate the project. Investigators claim that Moreno and his family received over $1 million while he served as vice president between 2007 and 2013. The ruling also includes a permanent ban on Moreno holding any public office.

Several other individuals were convicted in the case, including Moreno's wife, daughter, and brothers, who received sentences of two and a half years. Former Chinese ambassador Cai Runguo was also sentenced to five years in prison. Moreno has denied all allegations, claiming he never received any funds, and has announced plans to appeal the decision.
