Lenín Moreno sentenced to five years in prison for corruption
An Ecuadorian court has sentenced former president Lenín Moreno to five years in prison for bribery. The conviction is linked to a corruption scheme involving the construction of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant, the largest of its kind in the country.
Prosecutors established that the Chinese state-owned company Sinohydro paid approximately $76 million in bribes through fraudulent consultancy contracts, offshore companies, and foreign bank accounts between 2009 and 2018. The investigation suggests that Moreno and his relatives received over $1 million while he served as vice president under Rafael Correa.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court has permanently barred Moreno from holding public office. Due to a physical disability that prevents him from walking, he is expected to serve his sentence under house arrest. Several of Moreno’s relatives, including his wife and daughter, were also convicted for complicity and received sentences of approximately 30 months. Moreno has denied all allegations, claiming he never received any illicit funds and has announced plans to appeal the ruling.
