Google launches Googlebook laptops as premium Android-based tier

Google has introduced Googlebook, a new premium tier of laptops designed to sit above the existing Chromebook lineup. Unlike traditional Chromebooks that run ChromeOS, Googlebooks utilize an operating system based on Android 17, allowing for native execution of Android applications and deeper integration with Android smartphones.

Key features of the new category include enhanced hardware specifications, such as 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage as standard, and significantly improved battery life. The ecosystem emphasizes AI integration through Gemini, featuring tools like the Magic Pointer and Rambler to assist with productivity. To support developers, Google has also released a Linux terminal preview that runs a Debian virtual machine, providing a secure environment for coding and AI agent workflows.

Major hardware partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are producing these devices. While Googlebooks offer high-end features like OLED displays and metal chassis, some users have noted that core services like Gmail and YouTube run via web versions rather than native Android apps to ensure a desktop-optimized experience. Additionally, Chrome 155 has been deployed to allow more websites to function as standalone applications within the new OS.
