AMD and Microsoft unveil AI-focused hardware and software at IFA 2026
At IFA 2026 in Berlin, major technology firms announced significant hardware and software advancements aimed at local AI development.
Microsoft introduced Project Zenith, a specialized Windows 11 configuration for developers. Designed for high-performance hardware with at least 64 GB of unified memory and 250 GB/s bandwidth, Project Zenith provides a preconfigured environment including tools like Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot. The setup aims to facilitate running AI models with over 30 billion parameters locally, reducing reliance on cloud-based token usage.
AMD unveiled the Threadripper Halo Station, described by SVP Jack Huynh as a personal supercomputer. This workstation features a 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX CPU and can support up to two to four enterprise-grade Instinct MI350P GPUs and 2 TB of DDR5 memory. The system is engineered to run AI models with up to one trillion parameters locally.
Lenovo expanded its commercial and consumer portfolios, introducing the ThinkCentre X Ultra mini-desktop powered by AMD Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495. The company also showcased the ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 and the ultra-light ThinkBook 14x Gen 2. Additionally, Lenovo's Qira AI platform was expanded to support a wider range of devices, including Motorola smartphones and wearable technology like the moto watch ultra.
