Leo Carlsson's contract reshapes NHL market and Anaheim Ducks roster

Leo Carlsson’s recent contract negotiations have significantly disrupted the NHL financial market. After Carlsson signed an offer sheet from Philadelphia with an average annual salary of $18 million, the Anaheim Ducks matched the deal, making him one of the league's highest-paid players. This move has set a new precedent for young stars, leading to increased salary demands from other players such as Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, and Cale Makar.

However, the massive contract has created significant salary cap pressure for the Anaheim Ducks. To manage the payroll and ensure space for future talent like Cutter Gauthier, the team has moved to terminate the contract of veteran Chris Kreider. Kreider is being placed on waivers with his consent to remove his $6.5 million salary from the books. Despite being forced to leave the team due to these financial constraints, Kreider has expressed support for Carlsson, noting that hockey is a ‘tough business.’
