Leo De Vries faces end of 2026 season due to shoulder injury

Leo De Vries, a highly regarded 19-year-old infielder and top prospect for the Oakland Athletics, is facing a significant setback due to a right shoulder injury. De Vries, ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect for 2026 by MLB Pipeline, has been placed on the seven-day injured list by the Midland RockHounds, the Athletics' Double-A affiliate.

Medical reports indicate that De Vries must refrain from all throwing for four weeks. Given that the Midland RockHounds' regular season is scheduled to conclude on September 13, the injury will likely end his 2026 minor league campaign. There remains a possibility he could participate in the Arizona Fall League if his recovery progresses well.

De Vries has had a standout season at the plate before the injury, recording a .290 batting average, a .378 on-base percentage, and an .836 OPS across 93 games. His performance included 13 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases. Originally signed by the San Diego Padres out of the Dominican Republic, De Vries was a key piece in the trade that sent closer Mason Miller to the Athletics.
