Leo Gassmann stars in new Nazario Sauro biopic filming in Trieste

Filming has commenced in Trieste and throughout the Friuli Venezia Giulia region for the new television film, ‘Storia di un marinaio. L’incredibile epopea di Nazario Sauro’. Directed by Alessandro Angelini and produced by World Video Production, the project features Italian actor and singer Leo Gassmann in the lead role.

The film depicts the life of Nazario Sauro, an Istrian sailor and Italian irredentist during World War I. The narrative follows Sauro as he leads a high-risk submarine mission in Austro-Hungarian waters, resulting in his capture. Through his subsequent trial, the film reconstructs his personal history, including his family life and his decision to remain loyal to the Italian identity despite the threat of the death penalty for high treason.

Production is supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG and is scheduled to run from September 28 through October 24.
